The International Summer School 2014: Current Issues in Sign Language Linguistics (CISL)

Abstract

Coverage about the The International Summer School 2014: Current Issues in Sign Language Linguistics (CISL), organized by students of Deaf Studies Programme (with the support of Faculty of Arts and the Charles University in Prague) in August 2014. The Summer school consisted of two parts: (1) The section designed to professionals only: Summer School Lecture (August, 25-27) and (2) the section opened to the general public: Summer School Open (August, 28-29).

This event was very significant in many aspects: (a) it was the very first conference on sign linguistics and Deaf Studies in the Czech Republic; (b) it was the international conference, it attended by over 150 delegates from 23 countries of four continents, among them the world's leading capacity Carol Padden, Tom Humphries, Ulrike Zeshan, Trevor Johnson, Adam Schembri and Christian Rathmann; (c) the all action was initiated and organized (including finance) by students; (d) it was organizationally and logistically very complicated action, among others: there were permanently used four working languages: Czech sign language, written and spoken Czech, International sign system, and written and spoken English; (e) at least, not last, the Faculty of Arts of Charles University in Prague presented as an institution with solid status in sign linguistics and Deaf Studies towards the Czech and international professional public - thanks to the Institute of Deaf Studies.
