Slovakia and Hungary: Two Different Cases of Party System Change and Persistence after 2000.

Publication at Faculty of Arts |
2014

Abstract

The article compares the most recent developments in two neighboring countries' party systems. While the 2014 Hungarian parliamentary election confirmed a fundamental party system change signaled by the previous 2010 election, the 2014 Slovak presidential election cannot be taken as a proof of a party system discontinuity.

The election of an outsider nonpartisan candidate is actually in line with the Slovak pattern of incompatibility between the two dominant electoral arenas - parliamentary and presidential.
