Abstract
Submitted pursuit summarizes the most important moments of competitive climbing development. It shows in context its development in the world and in Czechoslovakia or Czech Republic.
The article illustrates the diversion from the primary system, which was called rockclimbing, where the main criteria of achievement was the speed of climbing, to the difficulty climbing, where wins the highest reached point on an unknown climbing route. The origin of real climbing competition is represented by Soviet rockclimbing.
This type of competition dominated in Europe till middle 1980s. Turn to difficulty climbing came in the second half of 1980s under the influence of French and Italian climbers.
Climbing World Cup in speed and difficulty climbing was established in the beginning of 1990s. First climbing competitions in former Czechoslovakia were in the beginning of 1970s.
The centre of its development was Slovakia, and in 1980s also climbing areas in southern Moravia. In the beginning of 1990s started the organizing of competitions entirely on artificial walls also in the Czech Republic.
Series of competition such as Czech Climbing Cup and Republic Championship were established. Competitive climbing gained its position between mountaneering events and itself became an interesting sport event.
