The Sack of Mantua in 1630: How Italian Paintings Found Their Way to Opočno

Publication at Catholic Theological Faculty |
2014

Abstract

The article discusses various Italian paintings and collections of drawings which are today to be found in Czech collections, and shows how difficult it is today to determine exactly how they found their way to the Czech lands from their original home in Mantua in the period around 1630. Not all of them were plundered during the war; some of them were purchased on the art market, while others may have arrived here by a completely different route (such as being part of an inheritance or a donation).

The article draws attention to this issue, which has so far not been dealt with as a whole by Czech researchers. A survey of Czech literature on this theme is supplemented by references to the most important literature from other countries (both articles and publications containing collections of articles), which can make a contribution towards extending this theme further or help clear up some outstanding questions.
