While in the field of codicology, certain categorizations of miscellaneous manuscripts exist (proposed by J. Peter Gumbert, Marilena Maniaci, and Denis Muzerelle), the content (i.e. "philological") point of view is still applied in an ad hoc manner.

As far as their content is concerned, miscellanies still remain a group of "leftovers." Especially in the later Middle Ages, this group is wide, including various combinations of excerpts, catechetic texts, popularized theology, meditation, sermons, scientific texts, poetry, etc. This paper attempts to propose criteria for inner classification of manuscripts within the group, taking into account both the context of their origin and their use, both the codicological and philological criteria.
