The Pseudo-Joachimite Expositio versuum extraneorum: Manuscript Transmission and Content Analysis

Publication at Faculty of Arts |
2014

Abstract

The very obscure poem of twelve verses sometimes called "Verses of a malign angel" (Versus maligni angeli, inc. Oppositum montem conscendere cernis orontem) of unknown date and time of origin was commented on at least four different times during the 12th century.

One of the commentaries is attributed to Joachim de Fiore in three of the eleven surviving manuscripts. After a presentation of the contents of this curious text (entitled Expositio versuum extraeorum), an overview of its medieval manuscript transmission will follow.

Special emphasis will be placed on manuscript variants that make the "Joachim's" version different from the earlier tradition. Finally, the reasons why this text had been atributed to Joachim will be searched for.
