Studying abroad is nowadays trend and student migration has increased over recent decades and has become one of the major forms of contemporary international mobility. However there is still a particular lack of attention to students in migration research, and the literature on student mobility seems negligible due to the fact that studying abroad is considered a short-term experience.

But young people who migrate for education play a significant role in receiving countries. For example in the Czech Republic education is the most frequent reason for applying for a long term visa and/or residence.

Russian and Kazakhstan citizens are among top applicants. My study explores the life of students from Russia and Kazakhstan in the Czech Republic, adressing the following questions: what kind of motivations and migration strategies do students coming to the Czech Republic have? How does family influence the decision-making process and the possibility for future plans in the Czech Republic? The field research for this article was conducted in few cities in Russia and in the Czech Republic, involving in-depth interviews with students and their parents.
