Absolutely and relatively increased number of seniors is an important phenomenon of the 20th and 21th century. The percentage of health care provided to the seniors is high due to their polymorbidity.
However, even healthy and fit individuals undergo changes in all their organs during aging. As compared with younger ones, these changes result in different disease manifestation or diverse effect of drugs.
A specific group of patients is represented by frail seniors, with long-term progressive decline of their fitness, resistance and adaptability, often with severe functional deficiency and repeated disease decompensation. These patients require specific attention and should undergo comprehensive geriatric assessment, predicting survival chance and risk stratification.
