ICON - a summary of the latest recommendations for management of bronchial asthma in children

Publication at Second Faculty of Medicine |
2014

Abstract

Bronchial asthma is the leading chronic lower respiratory tract disease in children. Major advances were made in understanding its pathophysiology and pathogenesis as well as in asthma therapy.

Nevertheless, the disease remains poorly controlled in significant proportion of patients. In the past years several national and international documents focused on childhood asthma were published.

The focus is on implementing the latest advances into clinical practice. The ICON (International Consensus ON pediatric asthma) document, published in 2012, is a collaborative work of leading pediatric allergists and pulmonologists.

Its aim is to compare existing recommendations and unify their conclusions. Main topics of the ICON document are reviewed in this article.
