Abstract

The epiphanic epizode on Jesus' transfiguration on the mountain, which exists in three different versions in the synoptic gospels, evokes several literary types and theological motives of the Old Testament. Hence it has been interpreted in many different ways and it has been favoured in the Christian theology and spirituality.

The study focuses on structural elements of epiphany, which relate the present story to similar texts of the Old Testament and of writings of the Second Temple. Thereafter it focuses on the role of Moses and Elijah, the motive of three tents and especially on the theological significance of the cloud and of the voice of the Father.
