Since the discoveries of the scrolls and fragments in Qumran and other localities of the Judean desert more than 50 years ago many of exegetes tried to demonstrate a strong dependence of the NT writings on them. There is a lot of the close relations, e.g. in the eschatology.
But there were not lacking also exaggerations. Some of the scientist have suggested an opinion Qumran would anticipate the whole revelation of Christ in the person of the "Teacher of Justice", the founder of the comunity.
A serious research however did not confirm that opinion. The Letter to the Hebrews is one of the writing of the NT on which the scientists suggest it reveals a similar mentality as the one of DSS.
The discovery of the long fragment of the XI cave where one of the most important persons is Melchizedek opened a new confrontation with the Letter to the Hebrews. The figure of Melchizedek in connection with an angelology of the Letter seems to depend on the ideas and the exegetical metods of the Qumran community.
The present study: (1) examine role and function of the figure of Melchizedek in the Letter to the Hebrews; (2) overview the texts in DSS writings where any role belongs to Melchizedek and of which kind this role is; (3) compare both groups of the texts and find out a degree and a character of their dependence.
