Abstract
Gastrointestinal stromal tumour is the most common non-epithelial tumour of the digestive tract. The possibilities of its treatment have seen rapid development in recent decades, with introduction of biological preparations.
Their efficacy in palliative indications was the reason why they were introduced in adjuvant treatment as well. Imatinib has an unassailable position as the first line preparation of choice for both palliative and adjuvant therapy.
If the initial dose fails, it is recommended to escalate the dose and only if that does not help to move on to other preparations, like sunitinib and regorafenib. There are many preparations which were or currently are being tested in clinical studies.
The role of surgical treatment is individual and indicated as needed during neoadjuvant imatinib application, or in cases of remnant metastatic disease. Indication of radio-frequency ablation can be similarly indicated.
