Physiological aspects of effects of altitude on the organism

Publication at First Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Physical Education and Sport |
2014

Abstract

The acute or reactive effects of altitude include hyperventilation, changes of vegetative function, and alteration of cardiorespiratory response to exercise and recovery. Long -term or adaptive changes to altitude are related to the maintenance of acid-base balance, production of erythrocytes and hemoglobin, and changes in cellular function and metabolism, including adaptation of myocardium and adaptation of hormone regulation.

Genetic predispositions to physical performance in altitude are also discussed.
