Salty Children: What Is Life with Cystic Fibrosis Like?

Publication at Faculty of Science |
2015

Abstract

This practical class for pupils of 3rd or 4th grade of high school presents cystic fibrosis (CF) as the most common genetic disease of its type, and also demonstrates some general principles of how organisms work. Starting with stories of CF patients, we get through the molecular background to heritability of CF.

Pupils discover how perfectly our immunity works (in comparison with the immunity of CF patients) to protect our lungs from bacterial infection, and also how antibiotics kill bacteria and how bacteria resist them. Thanks to the variety of methods used, the pupils' involvement is high.
