Sustainable development case studies and their use as a teaching method in regionally focused higher education programs

Abstract

This paper outlines the theoretical foundations for inquiry into regional sustainability issues using case study methodology. Qualitative methods of inquiry into mainly the social aspects of regional development are briefly explained, and a model of learning is introduced which is based on experience in a real-life context.

Case studies are a specific genre within academia which can also be used as a starting point for research. The paper therefore describes the basic principles of case study development, as it does the possibilities for its analysis and interpretation; it also demonstrates options for its use in teaching students qualitative research methods.
