CMV infection remains one of the most serious complication in the follow-up of haematopoietic stem cell transplantation. In spite of recent developments in diagnostic and therapeutic approaches, there are still many serious and difficult to treat clinical situations.
This article summarises standard approaches to prophylaxis and therapy of CMV infections and it further describes the current status of use of combined anti-CMV pharmacotherapy and use of intravenous immunoglobulins. Potential use of CMV-specific immunity reconstitution and anti-CMV cellular therapy are mentioned from the clinical point of view.
