The Holy See and the USA : An overview of its bilateral relations

Abstract

The Holy See is an exceptional international political agent the roots of which are deeper than those of the Westphalian (or Post-Westphalian) system of international relations. It is so thanks to its close interconnection with the Catholic Church and the institution of the papacy as such.

Nevertheless, it is interesting that its relations with other actors in international politics have not been subjected to a thorough scientific analysis. In both the Slovak and Czech academic milieu this deficit is even more evident.

In the paper I examine historical development of bilateral relations between the Holy See and the United States of America. From a vast number of historical breaking points and landmarks of the relations of these two interesting political entities I identify: creating of the office of president's personal representative to the pope, establishing of the full diplomatic relations during Reagan Era, and supportive American Resolution adopted in 2000.
