Rumor as a verbal injury in Russian law in 1845-1864

Abstract

This study focused on spreading of rumor as an offence against the criminal law in the half of nineteen-century Russian empire. The purpose of this study was to find out what the rumor is in Russian criminal code.

Before analysis, we need to make a brief outline of rumor into modern knowledge in this field. In addition, we need to see historical background to studies on rumors as a verbal injury in the contemporary law code, and, describe the purpose for using equivalents of Latin rumor in contemporary Russian language.

First, we analyze and describe the purpose for using the language equivalents of Latin fama and rumor in nineteen-century Russian language. Second, we analyze the structure of period criminal law code to find out some details for understanding rumor as a criminal offence.

Then we try to find out the objective conditions of growing rumor, and then we analyze Russian Criminal Code with willfully spreading false rumors.
