Oral and Oropharyngeal cavity complications after radiotherapy

Publication at Faculty of Medicine in Pilsen |
2015

Abstract

Oral and oropharyngeal mucosa damage after radiotherapy significantly impairs oncological treatment course, worsens quality of life in patients, increases risk of malnutrition and infectious complications. The major factors for radiation toxicity complications are tumor location, mass and type, radiotherapy conditions and techniques, critical organs and tissues (eyes, chiasma opticum, salivary glands, mucosa) protection.

Proper planning and preventive measures prior radiotherapy and nursing care may positively infl uence incidence and course of mucositis. Attention must be paid to long-term complications such as chronic xerostomia, dental caries and osteoradionecrosis.
