Amendments to the Education Act: Education of Czech Sign Language users

Abstract

The article describes some news in the amendment to the Education Act, which will come into force in September 2016 and will have a major impact on the organization and also content of education of the Deaf, especially Czech Sign Language users. These include the establishment of the interpreters and typists and an entirely new perspective on language education of the Deaf.

In accordance with the Law on communication systems of the Deaf and deafblind persons (2008), Deaf students-Czech language users will have the opportunity to use the speech-to-write typists who will convert speech into written form in real time. The Deaf students-Czech Sign Language users will have access to the interpreters between Czech and Czech Sign Language and their Czech language education will be realised via methods commonly used in the teaching of second/foreign languages.
