Abstract

Atopic dermatitis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease with characteristic morphology and distribution of skin symptoms. Numerous genetic factors influencing predisposition of the immune system to develop hypersensitivity reactions, as well as immune regulation or antimicrobial substances production can take part in development of the condition.

Some of those factors can contribute to development of other atopic diseases. Skin barrier defects and autonomic nervous system imbalance also take part in the pathogenesis of atopic dermatitis.

The complexity of pathogenesis is probably the reason for difficulties in treatment of atopic dermatitis and its better understanding is thus necessary prerequisite for some improvement.
