(De)criminalisation of possession of drugs for personal use - A view from the Czech Republic

Abstract

For the past 25 years, the extent and nature of (de)criminalisation of minor possession of drugs has been a key issue for drug policy in the Czech Republic. Czech drug policy has been considered modern, pragmatic, rational and sometimes too liberal.

However, this story provides an example of the continuous balancing between those calling for tougher criminal justice policy and a public health perspective that has highlighted the negative consequences of criminalisation of drug use and personal possession.
