Celebrations of the National Day as a mirror of historical changes of Norwegian society

Abstract

The paper deals with the history of the Norwegian Constitution Day and the 200th anniversary of the adoption of the constitution. The Norwegian constitution was adopted on May 17th, 1814 in Eidsvoll.

In 1947 May 17th was declared a Norwegian national holiday but the date had already been commemorated for more than 150 years before it. The celebrations have reflected the development of the Norwegian society and the struggle for modern democratic state.
