Czech historical atlases, the part of European atlas cartography of 19th century

Abstract

The paper is dealing with the problematic of bohemical historical atlases of the 19th century, i.e. the works in Czech language, written by the Czech author or issued in Bohemia. The first Czech atlas of this type was created by cartographer Václav Merklas in 1853.

In the first decade atlases were usually only a compilation of maps taken from successful works of foreign origin. The first original historical atlas was thus Atlas of Jan Lepař from the late 60s of the 19th century, which dealt with the history of Europe from the antiquity to the modern times.

At the end of the 19th century were very popular Czech versions of Schubert-Schmidt and Putzger school atlases. On Czech (and also on European) market in this period predominated the school historical atlases, but there were also works created for the general public and even two biblical atlases.

Czech historical atlases occupy a worthy place in the European historical cartography of the 19th century.
