Complexity in the articulation of Czech alveolar consonants

Publication at Faculty of Arts |
2015

Abstract

This chapter discusses complexity in segmental articulation. It is specifically aimed at describing articulatory patterns in Czech alveolar consonants.

Electropalatographic (EPG) data are presented on the articulation of consonants in different syllabic positions and prosodic contexts that support the existence both of specific patterns and of inter-speaker variability. Several data-reduction methods are discussed that attempt to capture the astounding complexity of articulator movements in a graspable form.

The chapter is concluded with methodological issues and implications of the findings.
