Sir Walter Scott's Concept of Beauty

Publication at Faculty of Arts |

Abstract

Scott lived at the turn of two epochs; he witnessed the end of the Enlightenment and the birth of the Romanticism. Both of these artistic movements promoted different ideals, including different ideals of beauty.

During this period women's fashion changed dramatically, the colourful crinolines were replaced with the white loose dresses. How did the ideals of the Enlightenment and Romanticism affect Scott's concept of female and male physical beauty? What did he think about the "beauty of a soul"? Scott mentions the beauty of body and soul not only in his novels and poems, but also in his letters and journal, so I decided to split my lecture into two parts, firstly I would analyze Scott's concept of beauty presented in his fiction and secondly I would focus on his life.
