Biodiversity hotspots

Abstract

In recent decades, Earth's biodiversity has faced fundamental threats caused by human activities. Modern nature conservation seeks to protect the greatest number of endangered species in designated protected areas as efficiently as possible.

One commonly used approach is the definition of biodiversity hotspots. These areas include valuable habitat for endemic species, which are also subject to extraordinary declines in their natural habitat.

Biodiversity hotspots can then be compared in terms of the number and success of unique species, endemism or the extent of original habitat lost.
