Abstract

The aim of our study was to test for sex differences in discrepancy between the image of an ideal and actual partner based on data from speed-dating sessions. We collected data from 55 participants who completed questionnaires on partner preferences before they attended the speed-dating session and on the person they selected one week after.

We compared the scores between an ideal and actual partner in 6 categories (Agreeable/Committed, Resources accruing potential, Physical prowess, Emotional stability, Surgency and Physical attractiveness). We found significantly higher scores in preferences compared to the real choice in all 6 categories.

However, we found no sex differences in ideal vs. real partner discrepancy.
