An education is becoming increasingly common reason for migration. According to the UNESCO statistics institute, over the past ten years the number of foreign students worldwide increased twice.

Students play an important role as in sending so in host countries. In the Czech Republic, education is one of the most common reason for applying for long-term visa or a temporary residence permit.

Among the number of foreign students are students from Slovakia, Russia, Ukraine and Kazakhstan. This article examines the migration strategies of students from Russia and Kazakhstan, and what kind of role do family and life phases of students play in educational migration.

The anthropological field study was carried out in Russia, Kazakhstan and, above all, in the Czech Republic - in student dormitories, university, language schools and other places that are important to students. The study includes qualitative interviews with 55 students.

For the majority of research participants the study in the Czech Republic was the part of their life project - emigration abroad (in some cases of the whole family) But there are also those who intend to return home after graduation from Czech university and to be more competitive in the labor market in Russia, or Kazakhstan. During their stay in the Czech Republic the initial strategies of students may change.
