The paper deals with the transformation of the attitude to violence and of the concept of heroism in the Old Norse saga literature. Íslendinga saga reflects the final stage of this development, when aggression had become despisable and heroism was ascribed to those who strove to maintain peace, mediate in conflicts and protect others. I analyze the narrative to see how the concept of heroism is expressed in the text, as it is never formulated directly.
