Residential facilities providing care without authorisation - basic information for health care providers

Abstract

The article provides the health care providers with the basic information about residential facilities providing care without authorisation. It explains why running social services without authorisation is illegal and brings a high risk for life and health of their clients who are dependent on the care provided.

In the Czech Republic there is more than 80 facilities providing care without compulsory authorisation, they focus on frail elderly people and people with mental illness. The systematic visits of the Public Defender of Rights revealed ill-treatment in each of 9 facilities visited.

The article refers to the public summary report of the Defender and shows potential threats also for health care providers and challenges for general practitioners whose patients live in such facilities.
