Abstract

Levothyroxine is a standard drug used for treatment of hypothyroidism. However, in some cases (10-15%) levothyroxine does not relieve all symptoms of hypothyroidism or TSH cannot be normalized by common doses of levothyroxine.

In such cases combined treatment with T4 and triiodothyronine (T3) is favorable. T3 treatment may have exact scientific background.

Previous studies have shown that there are various polymorfismus of deiodinases (enzymes involved in T4 to T36 or rT3 conversion) in different subjects. T3 treament should be stopped when there is not clinical effect after 3 months of administration.

Patient on combined T4 and T3 treament should be managed by experienced endocrinologist.
