Objective frequency vs. subjective familiarity: relationships between subjective norms and frequency in Czech nouns and verbs

Publication at Faculty of Arts |
2015

Abstract

The lecture summarizes the use of the objective frequency counts and subjective familiarity values in psycholinguistic research and deals with the topic of relation between these two variables, on the general level and on the basis of material of 63 Czech nouns and 35 Czech verbs. The objective frequency measures of selected words were taken from corpora SYN and ORAL2008 belonging to CNK.

The information on subjective familiarity was obtained by asking participants to indicate on 7-point scale how often they encounter the given word. The lecture shows how all frequency measures are interrelated, how they are connected with other subjective norms (i.e. imageability) and with reaction times in the lexical decision task.

One of the main result of analysis is that familiarity is connected more tightly with spoken frequency than printed frequency.
