This research presents evidence of political dynasties (occupational following) among Victorian MPs. Kin is indicated indirectly by measuring consanguinity which is an uncommon method in political science.

Frequencies of identical surnames (isonymy) determine consanguinity by use of surname paucity, Fisher's ɑ and Yule's K. Observed statistics are compared to expected values generated from electoral rolls and to Victorian legal professionals among whom occupational following is expected.

The discussion section offers an explanation for observed isonymy in line with other research which documents occupational following among elites in liberal democracies.
