Nephrotoxicity of medical drugs

Abstract

Renal damage is a frequent complication in both hospitalised patients and those treated at outpatient facilities. It is a condition that often presents no symptoms and spontaneously heals with no significant long term effect, but in some cases, it can lead to temporary or permanent loss of local function, which necessitates renal function replacement.

Acute renal damage is linked to high morbidity and mortality, especially in hospitalised patients. This article gives a comprehensive overview of nephrotoxicity of various drugs and contrast substances used in various imaging methods.

Mechanisms of toxic damage are listed, along with means of prevention of renal damage.
