Abstract

Czechs and Slovaks in Yugoslavia were often perceived, and before WWII also organized as, one national minority, despite speaking different languages and having different historical backgrounds. Tense relations between socialist Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia influenced the status of these minorities.

They became targets of repression after Tito-Stalin split in 1948, were considered potential enemies of the newly built Yugoslav state, and had their repatriation complicated, among other issues.
