Abstract

The socialist Yugoslavia aspired to integrate the Roma minority in the newly constructed society. Aiming at extinguishing the old prejudices against this ethnic group, the authorities provided the Roma with minority rights.

In the cultural sphere the benefits guaranteed to them were more generous than in other socialist states. Nevertheless this approach was not fully successful in overcoming the social and economic gaps between the Roma and the rest of the Yugoslav population.
