Abstract

The Turkish minority in the socialist Yugoslavia had to face strong resentment stemming from the Ottoman times. Although this ethnic group was provided with minority rights, it faced repressions during Tito's regime which tried to prevent the Turks from any emancipatory attempts.

Because of that the regime was ready to facilitate their emigration to Turkey during the 1950s. As a result the number of Turkish citizens in Yugoslavia decreased significantly.

Nevertheless the cultural influence of Turks in the country still remains important.
