Magnetism and hydrogen absorption in UNiZn

Abstract

UNiZn is the first Zn containing UTX ternary with the ZrNiAl structure type. Zn is smaller than other p-metals (Al, Ga, Sn, In) forming this type of structure.

This compound can be seen as analogous to UNiAl and UNiGa, but the small X ligand leads to a non-magnetic ground state with moderately enhanced Sommerfeld coefficient gamma = 100 mJ/mol K-2. H absorption leads to analogous effects (amount of hydrogen absorbed, crystal structure changed) as in UNiAlH2.3, in which the ordering temperature increases.

UNiZnH2.3 exhibits antiferromagnetic order below the Neel temperature T-N = 55 K.
