This paper wanders from modern IR into the land of ancient Chinese philosophy to wonder about foundations of the modern international system and order with the aim to expose limits of the Western modernity and Western IR. It offers a redefinition of the subject, which subsequently helps to problematize the 'particular vs. universal' distinction.

Through showing how the redefinition of the subject challenges fundamental political ontology of the modern international order, the paper opens space for further engagements with ancient Chinese philosophy and its different view on where 'the political' could be.
