In this chapter, devoted to the analysis of the news reporting by Czech media in 2013, we follow up on the research from previous years, with the same objective, i.e. to identify and determine the predominant characteristics of the news reporting on foreign affairs. The structure of the chapter, the research methodology and the way of choosing the analysed material remain the same as in previous years, which allows to continuously expand the dataset collected since 2008.

Thanks to the continuous data collection and the analysis of news reporting, a data backdrop has been established for the identification of trends in foreign-policy news reporting by the Czech media. The first part of the chapter is devoted to the results of a quantitative analysis, aimed at identifying the main issues and the actors and countries present in foreign-policy news reporting.

The second part of the chapter presents two case studies, focused on the analysis of media coverage of the flying of the European Union flag at the Prague Castle in April 2013, and the topic of the so-called Beneš Decrees, which were discussed in January 2013 in the context of the Czech presidential election campaign. The aim of these two specific analyses is to identify the contexts in which the events were reflected in the media and the interpretive frameworks chosen for these events.
