Cellulose, Oxidized

Publication at Faculty of Pharmacy in Hradec Králové |
2015

Abstract

Oxidized cellulose, a biocompatible and biodegradable cellulose derivative, has been used since 1945 as a hemostatic agent. Its other properties such as antibacterial, antioxidant, enterosorbent activities, and tissue adhesion prevention make it valuable therapeutic agent in a number of biomedical applications.

Its drug-binding properties, gel-forming ability and other characteristics needed for pharmaceutical excipients can be utilizable in the formulations of different dosage forms and biodegradable drug delivery systems based on microparticles. As it possesses free carboxylic groups, it has also been used as a carrier for drugs, enzymes, and proteins.

Considering continuing research on this field new potential applications of this polymer are outlined. http://www.crcpress.com/product/isbn/9781439898796
