Abstract
Peptic ulcers are defects in the gastrointestinal mucosa that extend through the muscularis mucosae into the deep layers of gastric and duodenum wall and they result from aggressive impact of acid and pepsin activity in gastric juice. Peptic ulcer disease means occurrence of peptic ulcers in this area.
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and Helicobacter pylori are the major risk factors for development of genesis peptic ulcer disease. The natural history of peptic ulcer disease ranges from resolution without intervention to the development of complications such as bleeding and perforation.
The management of patients with peptic ulcer disease is based on the etiology, ulcer characteristic and presence of complications. Peptic ulcer disease especially its complications are an important cause of population morbidity and mortality.
