Understanding condensed text

Publication at Faculty of Education |
2015

Abstract

Syntactic condensation of the text influences its comprehensibility. The article notes the need to take the level of the condensation into consideration with regard to its functioning in the communication and the ability of a producer and a recipient to understand such condensation.

Repeated surveys with 5th grade elementary school pupils and adults show that an individual is able to perceive 2 pieces of information from the condensed text at maximum. Including the exercises of stylization into curriculum which focus on possible ways of expressing infomation, including syntactic condensation, can positively influence the level of understending written texts.

Thus, stylistics helps to create reading comprehension skills.
