Abstract

Within the last few decades, the field of hepatic surgery went through a substantial progress originating from recent technical achievements and results of applied research in bioengineering, biomedicine and medicine itself. Such interdisciplinary research, based on a close cooperation between the medical and technical research branches, can achieve significant increase of the number of patients eligible for the resection or ablation of malignant liver lesions.

This paper summarizes the essential steps, both already performed and planned, in the development of the software package LISA (Liver Surgery Analyser). The goal of the LISA software package is to offer so called virtual liver resection, thus facilitating decision making in the pre-surgery phase in order to maximize the efficiency of the treatment process.
