The first article of the series Ergonomics in the dental office deals with the history and development of ergonomics, basic and special ergonomic branches and about ergonomics organisations Brief information is given about musculoskeletal disorders associated with on-the-job overloading and unsuitable off-the-job loading. The position of the dentist towards the patient plays an important role in the prevention of these problems.
The correct posture is derived from an active stabilised sitting position. The patient is set into supine or semisupine position to increase his comfort and to enable an application of the ergonomic principles.
The working field should be situated in the centre of the body. This can be achieved by adjusting the patient's head.
The conclusion of the first part brings ten principles of work with minimal loading of the musculoskeletal system.
