Abstract
After the 2014 municipal elections in Turkey, women accounted for 10.72 % of councilors and 2.89%of mayors. Thus, the political representation of women in local politics remains at a low level.
This article explores the reasons behind the belated attention afforded by women's organizations, who only "discovered" the inequalities in local politics in 2000. It then analyzes why there are fewer female politicians at the local level than in national politics.
Finally, it links the existent research on descriptive and substantive representation and the concept of critical mass in relation to the Turkish experience.
