White oral lesions - differential diagnosis

Abstract

Oral mucosal disorders are a heterogeneous group of diseases of various origin and severity. White lesions inside the oral cavity present the majority of them.

Oral lichen planus, oral leukoplakia, oral candidiasis, frictional hyperkeratosis are the most frequent ones. Systemic lupus, white sponge nevus and many others represent a less common subgroup of these mucosal diseases.

These diseases may be asymptomatic but some of them may cause serious complaints. General practitioner could be the first one to meet a patient with white oral lesion.

The focus of this review is to describe basic information about white oral lesions in the oral cavity.
