Abstract

Adipokines are protein-based group of agens that are being produced by adipocytes. These substances directly affect fat tissue or can via blood system participate in different physiological and pathophysiological processes.

It was found that adipokines affect food intake, energy expenditure, inflammatory processes, immune system reactions, development of cardiovascular risks (atherosclerosis, heart attack), insulin resistance, hemocoagulation or the function of the reproduction system. Up to now there have been identified several adipokines and they are intensively studied.

Cyclic effect of hormones during menstrual cycle is not responsible only for control of ovulation, but has also important effect on food intake and appetite. It is not known if possible cause of differences in energy intake during menstrual cycle can be changes in levels of adipokines or changes in sensitivity of receptors for adipokines.

In this review we devote to selected adipokines and to their relationship with menstrual cycle.
