The importance of the Bible during the Middle Ages and Early Modern period cannot be overestimated. This meeting focused neither on the biblical text itself and its transmission, nor on its reception in general, but attempted to grasp the variety of ways in which the Bible was retold.

Retelling is understood here in a wide sense, including adapting, appropriating, condensing, excerpting, commenting and enlarging the biblical text. Papers addressing various language versions, as well as papers attempting to trace a development or a transformation of this type within a particular community were included.

The meeting will consisted of two strands: 1. Texts and textual traditions (manuscripts and prints): The Life of Christ (Text versions: What makes the difference? Through what strategies? With what consequences?) 2.

Documenting and contextualizing the use of texts (communities and individuals): Biblical education (Catechesis and teaching tools: How to reconstruct community and readership behind the texts?)
